This is a post from another forum I belong to. Ken is very knowledgeable and has worked in the industry for close to 40 years.
My Name Is Ken Pearson CEO, of Bluesprings Music Group
www.bluespringsmusic.com I work with all types of genres of music and with Major and Major Indie Labels World wide, The Music Business today is a lot different than it was in the 60's and 70's. In the 50's, 60's artist would hang around out side the studios and wait untill someone came out and try to audition for them on the spot. If a A&R Rep heard something he liked he would sign them, and put up money to record and market the artist. Today it is different. The Industry is a major giant! They look at a Artist as some one starting a Business. If a person starts a business, he needs to understand the business he is starting and know how to market it and how to make a profit. There are millions of people in the world togay trying to make it in the music business. When I take a artist to the labels, they ask 3 Questions.
1. How Many Units (CD's) has the Artist sold.
2. How many radio Stations are playing the Artist.
3. How many tour dates are the artist filling a year and where.
With out answering these questions the right way, a artist will not ever be heard by the label. To run a business you have to Have a professional Recording,Mastered, with at least 1000 copies. Yes to Record and have printed 1000 CD's ready for stores cost between 15 to 20 thousand. You have to have a promo kit/Press Release. It cost another $3500 to be marketed on radio stations around the world. I tell artist all the time. "If You Dont Have The Money for your business, find investors". Today if a Artist does not beleave enough in there self to spend money to start there business, why should anyone else. When A artist comes to us with a Professional CD and We beleave the Artist has what it takes. We work with the Artist. Still at that point we charge $5000 to put the Artist on Radio and get Magazine Reviews for them. At that point, when the artist is on the radio it is up to the public if the Artist makes the charts. If the Artist does not make the charts they loose any way. There are 100's of 1000s of artist that do put up the money but only a few make it. I'm just trying to be honest! Email me and I will talk a little more if you would like Best Regards Ken Pearson
